In the beginning, there was a void. Out of the void, came two beings, one a being of structure and order, one a being of destruction and disorder. Acknowledging each other, these two beings set about creating a world for themselves. However, they soon discovered that neither one could create a world without the assistance of the other, and thus the Realms of Aurealis was born.
The keeper of law, who chose "Vall" as his name, created a natural order by which things would grow, react, and structure themselves. The entity of randomnness, who chose simple "Chaos" as his name, modified the Order-makers things so that they would have freedom of choice, natural decay, and emotions, all for the purpose of instilling randomness in the world.
After some time, the world was completed. There were creatures, plants, continents, oceans, caverns, all that a world should have. It was then that Vall, after meditating for many of what we would now call "centuries" discovered the secret to making intelligent life, and thus created a race, one to be a watchguard over the earth; the dwarves, with their smaller stature for living underground and in the mountains and their hardiness to survive the rigors of such a life. And because he was able to make them without the assistance (and influence) of Chaos, he was able to circumvent the natural decay of both species to a certain degree, granting them long life.
Chaos soon discovered Vall's newest creations, and demanded that Vall release to him the knowledge of creating these wonderous new creatures, and, reluctantly, Vall did so. Chaos imediately set about making a two creatures, the Ogres and the Drow. The Ogres were large and strong, yet ponderous and rather limited in intelligence, these creatures also struggled for much of the area that Vall had assigned the Dwarves to look after. The Drow were midnight blue skinned, lithe and agile, and cruel at heart, possessing a wickedness innate to Chaos's style of life. They built their homes deep within the earth the Dwarves loved so dearly. Heartened by his seeming victory, Chaos then created the orcs, a rather slow and un-wise, yet hardy and relatively strong race of creatures, which he set upon the forests.
Vall was greatly upset by his opposites actions, and immediately set about creating the other guardian races he had decided upon, the Nixies who would be one with the rivers and oceans of the world, and the Pixies who would be the guardians of the air.
Not to be outdone, Chaos began to work with the most powerful creature in the realms, the dragon, and created the creature he called the Drakyn. This creature was a humanoid version of the much larger dragon, and possessed some, but not all, of their models skills. They had small wings which, when the Drakyn matured, functioned to give them access to the sky. These became the creatures to harry the Pixies, and soon overtook the smaller, gentler race, and became lords of the skies.
Upon the loss of the skies, Vall went to Chaos and struck a bargain with him that lasts until this day. It was arranged that the creatures of Vall would not contest his Drakyn's rule of the skies if the creatures of Chaos would remain content to let Order rule the waters. The bargain was thus struck and has remained in place ever since.
After their respective creatures grew and propered, Vall became unhappy with the fact that Chaos's creatures seemed to be in control of most of the realms. Thus Vall began his most ingenious undertaking of all. He went to a small faction of the Drow Elves, a group who had grown dissatisfied with the way of their subterrainean world, and offered to allow them access to a new way of life, if only they would turn from their cruel benefactor and follow him instead. They agreed without hesitation, their hearts only filled with a hope for redemption and a desire for a better way of life. Suddenly, Chaos appeared, causeing the assembled elves to drop to the ground in worship. But Chaos simply said, in a soft, powerful, almost sad tone. "So be it. If you wish to follow my opposite, you shall be the opposite of my children as well." And before Vall could stop him, he cast a mighty enchantment that drained their skin a of its midnight blue hue and lef them pale, almost white. He also changed their eyes, so they could no longer see in the darkness of the night and the underdark. Unbeknownst to him, this also caused them to lose their weakeness in the light of the sun. Thus was the surface elf race born, those who turned from the evil of Chaos to follow the mandates of of Vall, and instructed to become the caretakers of the forests of the surface world.
Chaos was not content, however. The races that existed were all long-lived, but what was long life to an immortal? With that thought in mind, Chaos once again flew in the face of the know traditions, and created a race that would reproduce quickly, was strong and agile, smart and durable, and more highly adaptable than the others. They were, however, remarkably short lived in comparison to the other races. These creatures were known simply as "Human."
Thus the races were born.
As the varied races grew, seperate entities began to rise to power, catching the eye of one or the other god. From the Ogres, a powerful, intelligent and cunning warrior named Jizmak had risen to power, to lead his troops against the dwarven stronghold of a fierce dwarven king, Athos. Chaos decided that his ogres could rule the day if he granted immortality to his "chosen", so he bestowed the power of the gods, in a lesser form than his own, to Jizmak. Unfortunately for Chaos, the power was not soley his own, for when he granted Jizmak the power of the gods, he gave some of himself to the ogre, thus also taking a part of Vall's power as well. Feeling the drain, Vall looked down to see what had happened, and was appalled at the carnage that Chaos's new godling was wreaking upon the realms. Thus, Vall replied in kind, granting a like level of immortality to the Dwarven King, Athos. With both sides of equal power, the dwarves were able to hold
their own against the ogres, and the stronghold held.
It was at this time that Vall discovered others who had risen to power, Azurel, a tribal leader of the Elves, and Cyng Swiftwind, a direct descsendent of the original pixie. These two he also granted the power of immortality that they might watch over their races. Vall also noticed a young human male, named Raul, who had risen to be a protector of his kind, and of all the weak and victimized creatures, regardless of race. He had started a Paladinic order called the Sanctus Guild, and was continuing to strive for order, fairness and equality in the realms. Vall granted this young man with immortality in the hopes he would be able to aid the varied races of the world in the conflicts he knew was to come. Chaos was unaware of any of this, having turned from the world after creating the human race, but was informed by Jizmak, after the ogres had been trounced soundly trying to attack a small elven nation. Struggling to maintain his power, Chaos looked quickly about his creatures. He found a young drow elf who had gained a hold upon the usually matriarchal society, taking his city into such nightmarish cruelty that even the drow were unhappy. Jizmak recruited
this young drow and places him in charge of the collective subconscious. His name was Cauchemar, and he became the nightmare lord. Noticing the tipping of the scales of power, Vall took some time, and carefully inspected and scrutinized the individuals that now made up the nixie nation. From them, he selected two young female nixies, Atlanta and Calypso, and bade them become the guardians of their kind, but since the world has covered in over 2/3 of water, he assigned them seperate tasks. To Atlanta, he assigned the duties of watching over all the seas and oceans of the world, and all the creatures that lives in them. To Calypso, he bade her safeguard the freshwater rivers, streams and lakes of the lands, keeping them safe and clean
for all to use and enjoy.
Jizmak also, however, took a young drow thief named Mouseglove, who was the head of the Thieves Guild in the main drow city of Sshanntynlan, and granted him the powers of immortality, charging him with matters of intrigue and information gathering, as well as to two young Drakyn's, Io and Silverleaf. Unfortunately for him, he had forgotten the full effects of the randomness and free will he had instilled in all the creatures of the realm. Mouseglove was, in actuality, one of a small number of the drow who desired to live in peace with the other races of the world. Thus, upon his ascension, he went immediately to the Lady Azurel, and plead his case. These two formed a lasting bond, and, after Vall charged her with proecting his full
interestes in the realms, and granting her more power than any immortal before, Mouseglove and Azurel married.
Io and Silverleaf turned not to the tenets of chaos, but each decided to champion elements of the lives of the mortals, day and night. Io became known as the Sun Dragon, and Silverleaf took the title of the Night Dragon.
Thus is is to this day. Chaos still bides his time, looking for ways to regain his former level of power, and the forces of law and order seek to maintain their grip on the way of life all have come to know and
understand.
